Celebrate the Small Things

Hosted by Viklit.  Click here to sign up/learn more.

So I had all these pretty pictures from my travels/adventures this past week and I posted them.  Then I clicked the "Publish" button and Blogger went "uh... no?"  So I tried again.  "Uh... No.  Yeah- definitely NO."  So I tried again, and again.  "No."  Very firm, very final.  Blogger would not publish my pictures.

So this is take 2- still celebrating, but in a much less pretty way.

Sleepy Hollow V. 2.0  My dear friend from college got married this past Sunday up in Croton-on-harmon, New York.  The Blaze is in the same town.  I couldn't NOT go if I was gonna be there anyway.  So Saturday night, we drove up to Sleepy Hollow where I got to see a story teller tell the tale of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow in the Old Dutch Church.  It was great.  Then we drove up Croton and saw the Blaze for the second time.  It was just as great as last year and I absoltuely loved it.

All You Need Is Love  Then on Sunday I got to watch my friend exchange self-written vows with her new husband.  Everything about it was beautiful- it was a gorgeous day outside in one of the nicest parks I've been in, everyone was having fun and the whole thing was just perfect.  I'm excstatic to have been able to share her day with her.

Me: The Rabid Fan Girl  Last Wednesday was our 8th anniversary and Dave surprised me with tickets to see my favorite dancers from So You Think You Can Dance live on tour!  So this Wednesday we made the short drive up to Bethlehem so see Amy, Fik-shun, Jasmine, Aaron and all the rest dance their hearts out.  I was screaming so loud I almost lost my voice.  Seriously- I'm surprised I didn't just explode with excitment.  It was so, so great.

I apologize for the lack of pictures (they were really pretty, too! *pout*)  Perhaps later when Blogger is done having a hissy fit I'll be able to post some but fornow, let's just keep the celebration going, shall we?

A Special Day

8 years ago today I met my boyfriend face to face for the first time.  It was a Sunday and we met at a local outdoor mall.  We had dinner at a Mexican restaurant and then walked around the parking lot.  A barn- apparently a historic building- was still standing in the field and the streetlights made the whole scene rather nice.

We talked about our pasts, our interests, what huge geeks we both are.  And then, because we were hitting it off so well and didn't want the date to end, we went to see a movie.  It was Wallace and Gromit and the Curse of the Were Rabbit and it featured, among other things, some of the most adorable claymation bunnies I've ever seen in my life.  I worried that me squealing like a five year-old girl at the overwhelming adorableness might be a turn-off to him but I just couldn't help myself.  Every time a cute little bunny hopped across the screen I gasped and lit up like a Christmas tree.

He told me later on that that was his favorite part of our first date because he thought that I was adorable.

8 years later and I still squeal at cute things.  And he still thinks I’m adorable.

And after all this time I cannot imagine my life without him.  I am so lucky.

Escalation Cover Reveal

“I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones” - Albert Einstein

In Escalation, the final installment to Stephen Tremp’s Breakthrough Trilogy, a seemingly innocent discovery in Einstein-Rosen Bridges, or wormholes, becomes a Pandora’s Box—opening doors to other unexpected and unpredictable realities such as parallel universes, time/space travel, and an evil hitchhiker from another dimension.

Chase Manhattan has survived attempts on his life from numerous sources in his effort to destroy the technology. But he is far from safe. Now Chase and his comrades must not only break world renowned physicist Professor Nicholas Fischer out of prison a second time, but also smuggle him across hostile borders in Europe and the Middle East to prevent events threatening to spiral into World War III.

At stake: an end to Western civilization as we know it. The result: an epic clash where science and the supernatural take center stage, vying for mankind’s destiny. The setting is global as the world divides into an East vs. West climactic battle. The action is swift, adrenaline-charged, and non-stop. Unending twists and turns will keep the reader turning pages and wanting more.

Together, Breakthrough, Opening, and Escalation follow the lives of the unlikely participants from innocence to a coming of age through sacrifice, betrayal, passion, lust, unconditional love, and hope. Escalation will appeal to fans of modern-day science fiction, action, and horror.
Stephen Tremp, author of the BREAKTHROUGH series, is a suspense thriller writer. His novels are enhanced by current events at CERN and other scientific research facilities around the world. Theoretical physicists are searching for evidence of a wide spectrum of potential discoveries that were once considered fodder for science fiction, including: parallel universes and higher dimensions of space, dark energy, dark matter, anti-matter, and the Higgs boson particle--The God Particle--among other exciting concepts. These potential advances have the ability to change the way we perceive our universe and our place in it!

Stephen is also developing an animated children's series featuring a brother and sister who have a unique way of exploring their world--using a wormhole--in order to finish school projects for science, history, and social studies.

And, as you all know, Stephen is one of the masterminds behind Writers for writers so he deserves all the attention to his works that he helps to provide to other writers.  Let's give it to him!

You can find him here: http://authorstephentremp.blogspot.com/
Stop by today to say "Congrats!" and "Oh my gosh- your book looks sounds so cool I can't wait to read it!" and any other enthusiastic (because this book derserves nothing less) response your heart desires.

Memories of Murder Release Day!

Decades ago, the seeds were planted …
Today, dark, fathomless eyes rake the image before him. One final task and the transformation is complete. Steady fingers screw intricately carved horns on each side of a stiff brow, and a gargoyle suitable for Notre Dame scowls from the smokey mirror in satisfaction.
A jagged smile rips through his smooth, hairless face, and inked, reptilian scales caress his naked body.
A laugh of hideous resonance emanates from his gut as the demons of hell welcome Lucifer into their fold.
In a dungeon-like chamber, his Lilith awaits. The kidnapped daughter of a nun, groomed to fit the final piece in the complex puzzle for world domination. Will Lucifer marry his bride, on the summer solstice?
Only two things stand in his way ...
His greed ...
And ...
Detective Steven Quaid.

Howl

As the moon crept high into the black night her skin began to buzz like an electrical current.  The hairs on her arm rose as if posting a defense against the sting of the cold air, then erupted forth, flowing over her like magma.

She tried to breath, to cool herself with the frigid blackness of night.  But her throat burned as the muscles pulled and stretched.  A low growl issued forth, independent of her will, and she could only listen to the gravely sound.

She gave up fighting and doubled over as her back arched and snapped.  Her limbs twisted and turned underneath her like heavy machinery.  Her mouth snarled with the new teeth rupturing from within.  Her body vaulted and rose, then fell with the final exhale of humanity.

She stood and the light of the lunar sky caressed her fur.  Her lungs swelled in her chest.  Howl.

Insecure Writers Support Group and Cover Reveal for Moonless

Hello everyone!  And welcome to another awesome installment of the Insecure Writer’s Support Group!  Led by our indomitable leader Ninja Captain Alex J. Cavanaugh we gather on the first Wednesday of each month to share and encourage, express doubts and concerns, or offer assistance and guidance.  Be sure to head by the Ninja’s lair today to hear the BIG NEWS!

This month is especially awesome for me since I’m co-hosting!  Along with the amazing Julie Luek, Rachna Chabria and Ilima Todd!  Please take a moment to thank all my awesome co-hosts in your travels today.

I wanted to write something special for my month as co-host but I’ve also got a book cover to reveal for my wonderful friend Crystal Collier so I’m going to relay a short but potent anecdote from my early life as a writer.

One of my classes in college was playwriting and my teacher was a relatively famous playwright known for being tough and wonderfully inspiring.  The first course I took with him- an introductory course- was fun.  We were learning the ins and outs of the genre, reading lots of plays, taking risks.  There were few requirements on what you produced other than simple scenes and plot devices.  I had a ball.

Then I moved onto the real work- intermediate playwriting.  The task was to write ten new pages a week with the ultimate goal of coming out of the semester with a rough draft of a finished play.  They didn’t have to be good pages, my teacher often reminded us, they just had to be new.  Why?  Because that’s how you learn.

Well, this probably won’t surprise any of you, but I struggled with this.  I’ve always been a bit of a perfectionist about my writing.  I had to believe it was good in order to be able to share it with anyone.  So rather than producing ten new pages of material I would hand in two that I’d revised five times over.  And even those I would judge as not up to snuff.  Needless to say, this was not ok with my teacher.

So one day after class he asked me to stay and chat with him.
He sat me down and told me- point blank- “This is not going to work.”
I thought he meant the class, that I was failing.
“No”, he said.  “I mean you being a writer.”
I looked at him like a dear in headlights.

He explained.  Becoming a writer, he said, is learning how to mold and shape the ideas in your head.  It’s polishing the little details, the nuances that make the different elements shine.   It’s tweaking, in other words.  Which all means that you have to have something to tweak.  He told me that I’d never become a writer if I didn’t, you know, WRITE.

It’s the single greatest and most important lesson for me, and one I still struggle with.  Because that tendency to judge- to scrap the story idea or the sentence before I let it cross my fingers- is still there.  The desire not to share anything unless it really is “good” still inhibits me sometimes.  But sometimes, I write anyway.  And the one thing that I know unequivocally is that anything you’ve written- really, ANYTHING- is better than anything you haven’t.  Simply because it exists- you have something to tweak.

So I tell you all the same thing I tell myself everyday: just write.  No matter how stupid, how silly, how simple, how insert-insult-here it is; write it anyway.  You can tweak it once you’ve written it.  And you might actually turn it into something “good”.  But even if you don’t, you’ll still be better simply for having written it.  Just write.  That’s all.

A big thanks to Alex for the honor of co-hosting this month.  Please make sure to visit some of the other bloggers from the list on Alex's page and spread the love!

And now, without further ado: The cover For Crystal Collier’s new book Moonless:

In the English society of 1768 where women are bred to marry, unattractive Alexia, just sixteen, believes she will end up alone. But on the county doorstep of a neighbor’s estate, she meets a man straight out of her nightmares, one whose blue eyes threaten to consume her whole world—especially later when she discovers him standing over her murdered host in the middle of the night.

Among the many things to change for her that evening are: her physical appearance—from ghastly to breathtaking, an epidemic of night terrors predicting the future, and the blue-eyed man’s unexpected infusion into her life. Not only do his appearances precede tragedies, but they’re echoed by the arrival of ravenous, black-robed wraiths on moonless nights.

Unable to decide whether he is one of these monsters or protecting her from them, she uncovers what her father has been concealing: truths about her own identity, about the blue-eyed man, and about love. After an attack close to home, Alexia realizes she cannot keep one foot in her old life and one in this new world. To protect her family she must either be sold into a loveless marriage, or escape with the man of her dreams and risk becoming one of the Soulless.

This awesome title is going to be released on November 13th and all sorts of cool things will be popping up around the web as the time approaches.  Go here for the full list of participating bloggers.

Crystal, author of MOONLESS, is a former composer/writer for Black Diamond Productions. She can be found practicing her brother-induced ninja skills while teaching children or madly typing about fantastic and impossible creatures. She has lived from coast to coast and now calls Florida home with her creative husband, three littles, and “friend” (a.k.a. the zombie locked in her closet). Secretly, she dreams of world domination and a bottomless supply of cheese. You can find her on her blog and Facebook, or follow her on Twitter.

The Ghosts of Aquinnah Cover Reveal!

Ladies and gentlemen, without further ado I present to you the cover for Ghosts of Aquinnah:

A brilliant flash of light transcends through time.

Another freezes a cloaked figure within a frame of salty mist as waves crash against a rocky shore. Her harrowing expression shadows the beacon to a pinprick.

By the next blaze, she is gone. Only the lighthouse remains.

Hannah’s eyes blink in step with each heartbeat. Images of her deceased parents and Martha’s Vineyard explode like firecrackers inside her mind.

She shakes her head.

For weeks this eerie woman dressed in nineteenth century garb has been haunting my webcam, but tonight she stared into my soul.

Why? ...

Who is she? ...

Casting aside months of research on historic lighthouses, Hannah drives to the coast and boards a ferry.

What is the strange connection she has to this mysterious woman suspended in time?

Hannah finds out.

But, it’s not at all what she expects ...

Hannah unravels a century old murder.
