The Scent on the Wind

The wind ripped across the field, pulling the dust and dead leaves into the air and sending them flying outwards into new lands.  She watched the cloud grow like a bubble and then spread, depositing a layer of filth across the leaves of the corn husks.  They too were yellow and withered and she knew the fruit within would be small and tough to the teeth.

Above, the sun continued its relentless deluge of heat and even as she stood there she felt her brow burning with its intensity.  It had seemed to her like a tyrant of late, unforgiving and overwhelming; demanding that everything it touched bow to it and surrender absolutely.  Everything had.

But in the midst of the dried out land her nose detected the scent of life.  Just a hint of moisture in the wind- the faintest whiff of green things.  She knew rain was coming.

  1. Like the dust bowl during the Great Depression. Very descriptive.

  2. I love the deep descriptions and imagery. You should remember this post when you need to describe a villain, as your sun imagery is intense. We just got some rain in the night and it was soooo heavenly after a few weeks of sun.

  6. I'd take that rain right now, let alone in the harshness of that time.
