Celebrate the Small Things- Friday the 13th!

It's that time again!  Time to Celebrate the Small Things with Viklit.  Make sure you stop on by to say "hi!" and thank her for hosting this shindig!

This week, I'm celebrating:

The Best Unsuccessful Job Interview I've Ever Had  I appreciate that this may sound a little confusing- how can an unsuccessful job interview be 'the best'?  Well, when you go into it knowing (or at least being pretty certain) that you don't want the job but are simply trying to make a connection with someone in the company you end up with a lot more leg room than normal.  I was far less nervous than I have been in the past when interviewing for jobs that I really wanted or needed, so I was able to talk myself up without fear of sounding like a suck-up.  And when it came out that no, this was definitely NOT a job I wanted, we actually got to discuss other potential positions for me.  And that, my friends, is a serious win!  They say the key to finding that perfect job is making in-roads and I really think I made one this week.  So yeah- celebration time!

Halloween Is Coming  I am a bit of a nut when it comes to the scariest holiday and, when not making conscious efforts to curtail this, can go a bit overboard.  Well, I fell off the wagon this week.  I spent hours- literally, hours- looking online at decorations, activities, costumes, goodies to make and scary things to do.  My Amazon cart is filled with decorations that I so don't need but seriously want and i've clicked through more "look inside!" book previews than I can count.  I've booked activities for one weekend in October and am quickly filing out the rest in my mind with pre-requisite apple picking and haunted house visits.  And I'm indulging in a whole lot of daydreaming.  Yeah, I'm a bit obsessed.  But it's SO much fun!
What are you all celebrating this wekk?  Time to hop around and find out!

Ode to Friday the 13th

As the sunlight shrank back towards the horizon the last rays of light danced across the surface the lake; its idyllic blue water catching and scattering the light like broken glass atop the surface. Crickets serenaded the scene and in the distance an early owl hooted. The calm was disrupted by a nearby group of co-eds unloading their truck of heavy coolers filled with beer and sleeping bags. They cursed and laughed and threw bags at each other with flirtatious audacity as they set up their camp for the night. The broken down cabins surrounding them deepened in shadow as the sun crept further behind the trees. Deep beneath the crystalline surface of the water, where dark shapes lurked in the crevices of downed trees and muddy detritus something was stirring. And as the last spot of sun faded from the water’s edge… Jason awoke.

Murder, Madness & Love Blog Tour

Hello all!  Today I am absolutely delighted to be hosting the astounding Yolanda Renee here at The Beveled Edge.  Yolanda is stopping by in support of her book Murder, Madness & Love which was picked up by Curiosity Quills and re-released on August 19th.  As part of her tour she's giving us the skinny on everything from Black Widow Spiders to the do's and don'ts of book tours.  Today she's talking to us about writing killer (no pun intended) conflict.  So read on to learn more about writing conflict, this awesome book and the fantastic author who brought it all to you:

CONFLICT IS VITAL!

Conflict is defined as:

1.  war: warfare between opposing forces, especially a prolonged and bitter but sporadic struggle
2.  difference: a disagreement or clash between ideas, principles, or people
3.  mental struggle: a psychological state resulting from the often unconscious opposition between simultaneous but incompatible desires, needs, drives, or impulses –

Conflict is vital to most any novel or story and the author is tasked with creating believable conflicts for the protagonists and antagonists. Conflict creates suspense, gains empathy for your characters, and the resolution whether a happy conclusion or not, is vital, but especially in a suspenseful romance.

The writing gods say the best stories hold both major and minor conflicts as well as both internal and external conflicts. And this was my goal when I wrote my Alaskan based trilogy.

In Murder, Madness & Love Detective Steven Quaid finds that he has become infatuated with a woman who could be a murderer. His internal struggle complicates his investigation as he grapples with his emotions and his duty.

Sarah Palmer, the object of his infatuation and frustration, has her own battles and in one unexpected fight, they voice their issues. Will they transcend them and work together to catch a killer?

In an excerpt from Murder, Madness & Love, I've titled A Spider vs. A Hawk (Hawk is the nickname Steven Quaid has earned for his sleuthing skills) the personal conflict, or differences between the two main characters is voiced. Do you see a winner?

A Spider vs. A Hawk

Sarah did not trust Steven Quaid. He wanted to arrest her, and on no logical basis. Sarah quickened her pace and walked ahead, eager to be away from him.

Steven caught up with her, though, stepping into her path. "What’s the matter with you? I’ve tried my damnedest to get to know you, but you keep pulling away. Why? Why won’t you talk to me?"

"Mr. Quaid, please stop playing games. You don't want to know me. You want to catch a murderer—not just the one who killed those young women, but me, the black widow. Do you actually imagine a friendship between us—suddenly I’ll feel guilty because you’ve been so understanding, then what? I spontaneously confess. Get real. If you don't mind, Mr. Quaid, I can live without the small talk." No longer interested in hiding her anger, she bypassed him and hurried down the path once more.

"That’s Detective Quaid, thank you!"

His lack of response to anything else she’d said surprised Sarah. She turned to face him. "You don't deserve the title. A detective is a person who investigates. You know, uncovers information, facts, truths not readily available to the public. All you’re doing is listening to gossip. All you know is hearsay, rumor, and lies. Have you even searched for the truth? Or is your normal practice sitting on your duff and waiting for the murderer to find you, so they can get their sins off their chest? The Hawk! More like the vulture!"

Tired, she walked away slowly, her defeat evident in the bow of her shoulders.

"My friends use that name; you’ve no right! Stop walking away from me while I’m talking to you." He grabbed her arm and flung her around. "You want to trade insults. At least I’m not so callous I sing You Are My Sunshine right after learning of the deaths of two young women I knew personally. Or go to a party dressed in black and red, flaunting your spidery inclinations. So, come on, lady, what are you hiding from? Tell me what you know, because you know something."

She pulled her arm from his grasp. Anger sent adrenaline through her veins, but she stayed silent. He had his hands on his hips now, his rage full blown. He thought she dressed in black and red because she wanted to flaunt her spidery inclinations—appalled, embarrassed, and determined to fight back, she stood her ground.

"Tell me the truth. I’m listening. Truth for you means self-incrimination, doesn’t it? You’re one cold bitch. Don’t worry; I’ll uncover the evidence, and without your help. How dare you insult me! Who are you to judge me—a rich widow pretending to be an important executive while innocent women die because of what you did! Believe me, I have much better things to do than protect your ungrateful hide."

"Yes, I am a rich widow pretending to be something I’m not, while innocent women die instead of me. Because I can afford security guards and an entire police force to guard my ungrateful hide. In celebration, I wear the colors of my namesake and sing—with any luck, not off key. You know exactly who I am. The question is: who are you? A man pretending to be a detective while innocent women die while you chase... what? A spider? Since we both know who we are, let’s forgo the pleasantries. Just do your job, and I’ll flaunt my spidey-ness to hell and back!"

Sunlight blazes on an empty canvas.

Arctic winds gather snowflakes on a frosty window ledge as a statuesque form appears. She moves past a table littered with papers. Headlines splash news of murder, but it's the photo of another young woman with features mirroring her own that draws her attention.

A different headline peeks from underneath the Anchorage Times.

Wealthy Businessman Dies in Car Crash ... BLACK WIDOW SUSPECTED!

Graphic images swirl through her head and a tear rolls down her cheek. She drifts toward an easel and a trembling hand dips a sable brush into a palette of paint.
The Westminster doorbell chimes. The brush slips and blood-red paint stains the floor.

Detective Steven Quaid waits. His Tlingit, Indian features carved from granite, mask his Irish passion ...

Will he arrest her this time?

All fingers point to her guilt.

But, is she guilty of this cunning plot? Or, just a victim of circumstantial evidence?

The door opens ...

His eyes lock on hers ...

His heart races ...

Hers skips a beat.

Celebrate The Small Things- It's September!

It's that time again!  Time to hop on over to Viklit's place and say thank you for hosting this awesome blog hop!

This week I'm celebrating:

Writers  Every time I participate in IWSG I am overwhelmed- really, absolutely floored- by the support, generosity, encouragement and floods of heart-felt TLC I receive from other writers.  This community just astounds me and every time I get reminded- nay, smacked upside the head repeatedly with the realization- that these genuinely caring people are out there fighting the good fight against their own internal critics it gives me strength to keep fighting mine.  You guys take my breath away and I am so, so grateful for you.

Blog Tours  This coming Monday (September 9th, for those of you who like calendars) I will be hosting Yolanda Renee as she tours the intarwebs in support of her book Murder, Madness & Love.  She will be talking about why conflict is vital to a good story and giving us some insight into how she created the conflict in her story.  For those of you who don't know Yolanda let me just tell you that she is one of the nicest, most fun and most supportive ladies I've met and I have no doubt that I will have a ball hosting her and that we'll all learn a lot from reading her post.

Please remember to stop by Monday to see her guest post here and check out her site to get the full list of all the awesome bloggers hosting her over the next couple of months.

Pumpkin  I know it's just marketing but I totally fall for it.  I stopped and got myself a pumpkin muffin on the way to work yesterday cause I love those things so damned much.  I love that they're selling pumpkin doughnuts, sticky rolls and cakes in the bakery now.  And I love that pumpkins themselves are starting to line the entrances to a lot of stores I pass by.

I start bitching when they bust out the Christmas decorations in the beginning of October but when they start out with the hints of Halloween at the beginning of September I'm all for it.  Why?  Because Halloween is my favorite holiday EVER!  Plus, we gotta get a move on if we're gonna have some fun before the blob (as in it eats everything in its path) of Christmas gets here!

Did you guys all participate in IWSG?  (If you did and I didn't stop by please leave me a comment so I can fix that!)  Are you coming by Monday to read all of Yolanda's insights on conflict?  What do think of the pumpkin craze?  Let me know, your comments make my day!

Now, as always, hop along!

First Ride

“I don’t want to go,” he said.  He folded his arms over his chest in the most defiant manner he could muster and pouted at her.

“Ok, you don’t have to,” she smiled at him. The light in her eyes made the smile spread across her face.

“I’m going!” he said, stomping his foot and turning forward.  He stood there perfectly still for a moment and watched the tall girl in front of him play with her ponytail.

The sun beat down on them as they waited and the smell of cotton candy and fried food made his thoughts wander. She had packed them healthy turkey sandwiches and carrot sticks for lunch and he hated her for being so organized. If she had just forgotten the cooler bag along with her sunglasses he could be eating french fries and pizza by now.

The screams of people plummeting several stories startled him and his eyes shot towards the chaos. His breath caught in his throat as he watched the coaster dive down the track and then shoot back up into the sky towards an impossibly large loop.

“Mom!” He turned to face her again and arched his eyebrows at her.

“Sweetie, we really don’t have to go if you don’t want to.  We can just ride the carousel or go play in the fountain.”

“The carousel is for babies! Besides, I’m too tall for it!”

“Oh, Jacob- you’re never too tall for the carousel! You know that's me and your dad’s favorite ride.”

“You guys are old,” he laughed.

“Thanks, Bud.” She rolled her eyes at him. “Listen, just because you’re tall enough to ride doesn’t mean you have to.   It’s not going anywhere- we can go walk around the park and come back later if you want,”she said, giving his shoulders a squeeze.

“No, we have to go now!” he pulled himself out of her grasp and nearly collided with the girl in front of him. He caught himself on one foot then threw his weight back and landed against her belly.

She steadied him with a firm grasp and kept her hands on his shoulders until he started squirming.  As the line moved forward the railing separating the flat yard from the ramp approached them.

“We better make a final decision here…”

“We’re going!” His voice broke through the chatter around them and a few heads turned to look at the source of the ruckus.

As they approached the platform he reacted like someone had turned him on turbo; hoping up onto the railing and climbing across, jumping down and hoping onto the next, looking and listening and straining like a racehorse in the pen. She couldn’t help but grin as she watched him.

Finally, they were standing on the platform waiting for their car to arrive.  She leaned over him and whispered “You ready?”

He nodded, breathless and wide-eyed, and stepped forward as the seats opened in front of them.

Insecure Writer's Support Group- 2nd Anniversay Post!

Today's amazing 2nd anniversary post is hosted, as always, by the truly amazing Ninja Captain Alex.  If you haven't stopped by his site first (which I assume you have, but just in case), go there right now!  He's got big news about IWSG!

Co-hosting this amazing anniversary edition are the equally wonderful Chemist Ken, SL Hennessey, Michelle Wallace and Joylene Nowell Butler.  Stop by, say thank you, scribble happy things on their post and let them know that they rock- cause they do!

And now, and I hate to do this after so much positivity, but I am a very, very insecure writer and this is the place to let myself fall apart a little.  So without further ado, my insecurities:

I’ve been dealing with a lot of rejection lately.  Not just from prospective publishers but from a whole bunch of potential employers.  Three phone interviews have led nowhere and I’ve got a couple of rejection e-mails from publishers in my inbox that I’m not sure what to do with.

All this, needless to say, is fueling a fire that already has a tendency to burn out of control.  “See?  You should’ve known better”  “What were you thinking?”  “Of course they don’t want you- why would they?”  It uses the evidence at hand to support its case and that little inner voice who normally jumps up to defend me struggles to counter it.

I’ve been fighting this for years- for as long as I’ve been alive, in some ways.  And although I’ve mostly given up on being judge, jury and executioner I still have a very active judge and jury in my head and they make some pretty convincing arguments.

On the good days, I can shut it down pretty quickly.  Those jumping flames of criticism are dampened by my will which I’ve nurtured and nourished over the years.  I keep plugging away at whatever it is I’m doing and tell myself that the sheer willingness to do that means I’ve won.  I remind myself of my past victories and how they came to me.  I listen to the supportive people around me and their voices drown out all those doubts and harsh words.

But on the bad days, the ones like yesterday, it gets much harder to defend myself.  My will isn’t as strong and that judge and jury could set the entire library of my ideas on fire like an angry mob.  I imagine a book burning in my head where my story ideas, dreams and hopes for the future get thrown onto the pyre with a chorus of destructive calls as a soundtrack.

I’m not as bad as I used to be- I have to remind myself of this.  I used to be able to tear myself down so thoroughly that even the support of friends and family couldn’t make a dent in the shell of self-hatred I enclosed myself in.  Now I don’t let myself get that far down- even on the bad days.  I do something else, distract myself, force myself to engage in another activity.  Action has always been my greatest defense against negative thinking simply because it forces me to think about something else.

But the will to try again- to submit another story, send out another application- that’s the key.  Because every story I write makes me a better writer.  Even if the story is terrible and leads nowhere- I learn, I grow.  And every application gets me one step closer to the one that will finally click- the magical combination of the right time, right company, right interview.  And every single time that I try again I dump a giant bucket over those flames of self criticism (and that judge and jury look pretty darned silly when they’re soaking wet!)

My friends and family help a lot with this.  Being gentle with myself helps a lot.  And you guys- boy do you all help a lot.  Because you are still writing.  And you struggle with self criticism, and rejection from publishers, and book deals pulled out from under you with no warning, and bad sales, and pressure, and doubt and everything else.  And you’re willing to share it all with me, and to keep writing.

I’m not worried about getting published right now- I’ve got a day job.  And staying at that day job a while longer won’t kill me so if it takes some time to find a better job that’s OK.  The most important thing for me is the ability to try again, to not give up in the face of rejection.  Because every time I do, I win.

Don't forget to stop by the full list and visit other bloggers.  I've got some new peeps to meet myself, and I'm sure they can use the support just as much as I can.
